Sexual trauma and the effect and impact on body experience and intimacy

In this webinar we will inform about:

The body as a source of information

Consequences of traumatic experiences on the body. How the connection with the body gets distorted and also the connection with the other person. The lack of ownership, traumatic memories are physical, body related. There is a pulling back, out of the body, feelings of disgust, guilt, hate, shame, and so on.

Body oriented Interventions: the contribute an active role in the recovery of the disturbed relation with the body and contact with others, by body awareness and awareness of senses (perception and impression), by regulation and expression of emotions (expression), by working with the memory of the body, by re-owning the body, intern locus of control and by pleasure, positive interactions, positive emotions.

‘ Definitions’ about intimacy and sexuality

Disturbed development of own experience of intimacy and sexuality

Imprint of the perpetrator on the experience and development of sexual identity. Who’s identity is it? (what is the imprint of the sexual abuse and the perpetrator on their own sexual development?)

Confusion: safety – unsafety (what is safety? As well in relation to how safety is experienced and related to what is well known.

Model of inner diversity. Where the dynamics between all the different parts, that occur in victims, play their own role and have their own influence on how they adapt to the world/people around them.

Body awareness isn’t enough: it’s essential to take the signals seriously and practice to act on it. It needs practice (van der kolk, 2006)

“..after confrontation with physical helplessness it is essential to engage in taking effective action” (van der Kolk, p. 277)

We will add the theory with casuistics and also with experiences/exercises.

Examples of Exercises for webinar 1:

  • Guided meditation for tuning in with the body. Get body-informed information. Connecting with safety-unsafety.
  • With alignment, grounding, breathing (resources)
  • Around boundaries: exploration of feeling space (inside and around you), push-movements, expressing words with movement
  • With the words intimacy and sexuality: writing words on paper and sharing about it.

Om underviseren

Eveline is a researcher, psychomotor therapist and expert by experience. She believes that help in restoring intimacy and the experience of sexuality in people who have been victims of sexual abuse should receive more attention within mental health care. Creating this module is a first step towards this. This module brings together her knowledge, skills and experience.

Saskia is a very experienced psychomotor and sensorimotor therapist. Over the past 20 years, she has worked within ARQ/Centrum'45 with different target groups and clients with diverse cultural backgrounds. She has now made her mark in the field of trauma and body-oriented interventions. By developing new methods and her work, she hopes to contribute to the restoration of sexual development in victims of sexual abuse.
